KANSAS CITY -- The names roll smoothly off the tongue, for they have become legendary. Willie Mays. Willie McCovey. Barry Bonds. Juan Marichal. Christy Mathewson. Carl Hubbell. Mel Ott. Each occupies a hallowed spot in the pantheon of Giants franchise greats. Add another to this assemblage: Madison Bumgarner.
The 25-year-old left-hander joined this distinguished group Wednesday night by completing a World Series performance that might rank as the finest by a Giant in the club's history. He garnished his victories in Games 1 and 5 with five shutout innings of relief to earn the save in Game 7 to help San Francisco outlast the Kansas City Royals, 3-2. The decision sealed the Giants' third World Series triumph in five seasons.

With the win, the Giants broke a string of nine consecutive home-team wins in Game 7 of the World Series, becoming the first road team to win Game 7 since the 1979 Pirates.

Predictably, Bumgarner was unanimously named the Series' Most Valuable Player Award winner after allowing one earned run in 21 innings, for a microscopic 0.43 ERA. The award created a matching set for Bumgarner, who also won MVP honors in the National League Championship Series against St. Louis.

"You know what? I can't lie to you anymore," Bumgarner said in a postgame news conference. "I'm a little tired now."

After coming on in relief of Jeremy Affeldt, who pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Tim Hudson, Bumgarner showed no fatigue against the Royals, whom he limited to two hits in Game 7.

After San Francisco scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth inning on Michael Morse's RBI single, Kansas City used three relievers to blank the Giants over the final five innings -- something Bumgarner did all by himself after pitching a four-hit shutout three days earlier in Game 5. He became the first left-hander to pitch at least four innings in Game 7 of the World Series on two days' rest since the illustrious Sandy Koufax beat the Minnesota Twins in 1965.

Typically, Bumgarner would have thrown about 40 or 50 pitches in the bullpen on Wednesday as part of his between-starts workout. Thus, before the game, Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated that Bumgarner could last that long if summoned to face the Royals. Nobody anticipated his yeoman, 68-pitch output. However, Bumgarner regarded it as simply doing his job.

"I wasn't thinking about finishing the game or how many pitches I was going to go or pitch count," he said. "I was just wanting to get outs."

Bumgarner yielded a single to the first batter he faced, Omar Infante, before proceeding to retire the next 14 batters he faced. Then, with the Giants one out from victory, Alex Gordon lined a single to left-center field on an 0-1 pitch. After the ball skipped past center fielder Gregor Blanco, left fielder Juan Perez struggled to pick it up as Gordon raced to third base.

That didn't faze Bumgarner. Salvador Perez popped a 2-2 pitch into foul ground outside of third base, where Pablo Sandoval made a careful, two-handed catch before falling backward in ecstasy. The Giants, many of whom played on the Series-winning teams of 2010 and '12, flooded the field in celebration.

"He's incredible," Morse, who drove in two runs, said of Bumgarner. "He's a different human being. Yesterday, I told him, 'If you're going to go out there tomorrow, you better bring it.' And he said, 'Just watch me.'"

HOW THE GIANTS WON

The Giants resorted to what they've jokingly called their "ground attack," an unglamorous but effective form of offense. They scored twice in the second inning, loading the bases with nobody out as Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie nicked Sandoval with a pitch and yielded singles to Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt. Sacrifice flies by Morse and Brandon Crawford delivered the runs.

With the score tied, 2-2, the Giants inched ahead in the fourth, which began with singles by Sandoval and Pence. One out later, Kelvin Herrera relieved Guthrie to face Morse, who singled home Sandoval on an 0-2 pitch.

"I just told myself to stay relaxed, see the ball over the middle, try not to do too much and try and put it into play," Morse said.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Turning two in review: The Giants converted a huge pair of outs in the third inning, aided by replay review. They were granted a double play as an initial "safe" call was overturned to "out" at first base

The play began in eye-popping fashion, as Giants second baseman Joe Panik dove to snare Eric Hosmer's grounder and shoveled the ball to shortstop Crawford, who covered second base and forced out Lorenzo Cain.

"That was the key to the game," said Affeldt, who was pitching at the time and who earned the win. "It kept them from rallying for another inning. So I think being able to shut it down real quick allowed me to go out for another inning. That was a big deal. For me, that was the biggest play of the night."

Perfect Pablo: The Giants received much-needed offense from Sandoval, who went 3-for-3 and scored twice. If this was his last performance as a Giant -- he's eligible for free agency -- he at least left the club with his best.

10/29/14: Pablo Sandoval goes 3-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored in the Giants' Game 7 victory

"Great players have a way of rising to the occasion," Bochy said. "He did that."

This completed a postseason in which Sandoval batted .366 (26-for-71). In his previous postseason, 2012, he was named the World Series MVP Award winner.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS

• Giants starting pitchers accumulated only 32 1/3 innings in the seven-game Series. That's the fourth fewest by a Series-winning team. The starters for the 1979 Pirates amassed 30 2/3 innings, and the 2002 Angels and 1960 Pirates each had 31.

KANSAS CITY -- The volume rose here in those fleeting moments before the final out. Alex Gordon had hustled three-quarters of the way around the bases on the ball that skipped away from Giants center fielder Gregor Blanco. So he was standing on third, and the Royals' faithful were standing on their feet at Kauffman Stadium. A Royals team that has sometimes seemed made of October magic was 90 feet from a tie in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the World Series.
But Big Country, Madison Bumgarner, was on the mound. And those 90 feet were a country mile.

KANSAS CITY -- It's always a little odd when a road team clinches the World Series. The stands get very quiet, but what's going on on the field is pure chaos -- players piling on each other, hugging, yelling, celebrating, while 40,000 fans watch in relative silence.
That was the scene at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday night. Pablo Sandoval caught the final out -- a popup by Salvador Perez -- in foul territory and laid flat on his back in sheer ecstasy, while teammates, some jumping over him, rushed onto the field to celebrate the Giants' 3-2 victory in Game 7.

With a little help from Giants center fielder Gregor Blanco, the Royals came oh-so-close to tying Game 7 of the World Series with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
Trailing, 3-2, Alex Gordon interrupted Madison Bumgarner's dominant relief outing with a line drive to center that Gordon initially thought was a single when it bounced in front of Blanco, but the ball got past the Giants center fielder.

KANSAS CITY -- The day they buried Dan Purtell, his friends and family gathered in a bar in Binghamton, N.Y. They shared the stories of a life fully but all-too-shortly lived. They cried, they hugged, they laughed and they drank. And then the clock struck 8 p.m. ET, and all eyes turned to the television sets hanging above. And they rooted for the Royals and their hero, Jeremy Guthrie, in Game 7 of the World Series.
It was just two weeks earlier that the Royals had clinched this Series berth. For Dan, a 35-year-old lifelong Royals fan fighting a cruel and unwinnable battle against the cancer that would soon claim him, the moment was bittersweet. Dan turned to his wife, Serena, and had tears in his eyes.

This was it: World Series Game 7. Winner-take-all. The Royals, seeking their first title since 1985, against the Giants, seeking their third title in five seasons.
The starting pitchers Wednesday were San Francisco right-hander Tim Hudson and Kansas City right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, but given the all-hands-on-deck, do-or-die nature of the game, there was a very real chance that both managers would exercise a quick hook.

Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner just finished off one of the all-time great postseason performances. After dominant starts in World Series Games 1 and 5, MadBum entered in the fifth inning of Game 7 hoping to lock down the Royals offense and protect San Francisco's one-run lead.
He did just that -- earning a rare five-inning save while giving up just two hits and no runs. That performance helped lead the Giants' to their third World Series championship in five seasons. In fact, Bumgarner has been so good in the Fall Classic, he now sports a career 0.25 ERA across all three campaigns.

KANSAS CITY -- The back fields of Spring Training in March are a long way from the spotlight of the World Series in October, but a concept drilled into the minds of the Giants' hitters every day during those endless workouts in Arizona wound up paying huge dividends on the game's biggest stage. The mantra: Find a way to get that man in from third.
It's simple, really, yet not that easy to execute. It's Baseball 101, and the Giants passed that course with flying colors in wrapping up their third World Series title in five seasons with a 3-2 victory in Game 7 over the Royals on Wednesday night.

KANSAS CITY -- Maybe, Larry Baer figured, this was the way it had to be.

Except maybe the approach had hit a roadblock. With two outs, nobody on base in the ninth inning and the Giants leading Game 7 of the Series, 3-2, Alex Gordon kept Kansas City's hopes alive by singling to center field, where the ball skipped past Gregor Blanco and skittered to the wall. Left fielder Juan Perez had trouble picking up the ball, enabling Gordon to reach third base.

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals' clubhouse was eerily quiet and somber as general manager Dayton Moore went through and hugged each of his players at their locker.
The club's improbable postseason run was over, derailed by a dynasty, as the Giants captured their third World Series championship in five seasons.

KANSAS CITY -- Once Madison Bumgarner entered World Series Game 7, he did not speak to anyone about his workload. When Bumgarner consulted pitching coach Dave Righetti, the two discussed only strategy -- at least until Bumgarner walked off the mound after the eighth. At that point, he needed to do nothing more than glance at Righetti.
"You're in," the pitching coach told him, before Bumgarner nailed down the final three outs of the Giants' 3-2 victory over the Royals on Wednesday night.

KANSAS CITY -- The baseball bounced clear past Gregor Blanco, a miracle-in-the-making for the millions of Royals fans waiting nearly three decades for a spark. It scooted to the wall, where Juan Perez kicked it far enough away for Alex Gordon to race to third. "Oh my God, this is happening," Blanco thought to himself Wednesday night as the Royals gasped for one last breath in World Series Game 7.
Then Madison Bumgarner popped up Salvador Perez, transforming what could have been one of the most memorable World Series gaffes in history into a footnote. The Giants won, 3-2. No one flinging champagne in the postgame clubhouse was more relieved than Blanco.

KANSAS CITY -- With Wednesday night's 3-2 victory in Game 7, the Giants became the first club to win three World Series titles in a five-year span since the Yankees won four from 1996 to 2000.
And while the Giants' roster has changed throughout those five seasons, nine names have remained a constant, driving this extended postseason success.

KANSAS CITY -- When he takes ground balls during batting practice, Giants second baseman Joe Panik always practices flipping one or two with his glove towards second base on the off chance that he might have to actually do it in a game at some point.
Of course, he's never practiced it while diving and laying flat on this stomach, but really when is that ever going to come up in a game? Turns out the answer was at a key moment Wednesday night in the Giants' 3-2 victory in Game 7 of the World Series.
